About Deal Hop Farm

In 2017, following an idea that came out of a community brain-storming supper, we began the creation of a patchwork Hop Farm made up of peoples’ gardens, allotments, community gardens and other spaces in and around Deal. Initially, the project was run under the umbrella of ‘Deal With It’ – a local environmental group, but it soon became an independent project known as The Deal Hop Farm

Now at the end of our fifth season, we have more than 250 sites growing Prima Donna hops involving over 400 people, making us one of the largest ‘farms’ in the country. We are partnered with Time and Tide Brewing, based in Eastry, Near Deal. We gift our hops to them and they in turn use them to produce beer which is available year-round in our pubs, cafes, outlets and the odd record shop! Over our first five seasons, our hops have been used in 17 different beers with some 95k pints produced. Quite an achievement.

In addition to enabling the production of local beers, we have created a fantastic community spirit with several hundred local people actually harvesting the hops in September which has continued despite the coronavirus pandemic.

The Deal Hop Farm is a great example of local food linking local growers with the local brewery and local pubs. We are a friendly group of like-minded individuals who work together to grow, harvest, learn, have fun with hops and produce some quality local beers which we enjoy drinking!
