Membership

We are a group of hop growers, who work collaboratively to cultivate hops, gain knowledge and enjoy the process while producing high-quality, locally brewed beer. We welcome new members to join us at any time.

Despite the project’s name, we function more as a “workers co-operative” than a commercial farm. The direction of the project is determined by its members. We will integrate business aspects of the project with the workshops, brewery tours, and hop farm visits planned throughout the year. Our Annual General Meeting is held in January, and we have a constitution and audited accounts.

Our project covers Deal and nearby villages and communities. While we are happy to accept members from East Kent, it’s important to note that the harvest occurs over just a few days in September. If you’re willing to travel, distance is not an issue.

We strive to maintain low and transparent costs. Roughly £9 of your £20 first-year membership fee contributes to club expenses, including publicity, workshops, our October Celebration, and development costs for future branded beers. The renewal fee for the second year will be determined by members at our AGM, but we anticipate it will be approximately £5 per year. Once you purchase the hop rhizomes, they belong to you and can last up to 20 years!

Before joining, it’s essential to understand the basics of hop cultivation, especially where to plant them in your garden (we have a separate planting guide). Hops do require ample sunlight, room to grow, and regular watering, particularly during their initial year.
